Book Review: Shardon's Guise by Stephen Lucas Lacroix | The First Song, Book 2

shardon's guise front coverTitle: Shardon's Guise
Subtitle: The First Song
Series no. 02
Author:
Publisher: Stephen Lucas Lacroix
Published date:
ASIN: B079SK9LT1
Genre: Fiction, Fantasy, Adventure, Epic Fantasy
Language: English
Buy: Shardon's Guise (The First Song Book 2)

Shardon's Guise is the second book of The First Song series. I can say the story is getting more interesting with this one. As the heroes of Unibeltrasia is prepping their battle against the Xerxecians, another mysterious enemy attacks their kingdom's tombs. With the enemy's baffling motive as to why it's hitting their ancestry, some of the Unibeltrasian heroes are already suspecting hostility within their circles. With this new conflict, their friendship will be tried again.

Cutting my slight spoiler, here are some strong points about the book:
- I'm already liking the development of the story
- exposing the story of their origins/past
- the ending makes me anticipate to read the third book more

Lastly, my suggestions: as I've already suggested in my review of the first book, a map of their kingdom would be a good addition. Also, a glossary of terms and characters for Young Adult readers. And I still don't like the cover art. I'm just not fond of realistic or 3D art cover for books.

I'm giving this book a rating of 4.0 / 5.0

For readers who like adventure fantasy, this book is a must try. The Red Prince is more of epic fantasy comparable to the genre of Lord of the Rings and A Game of Thrones. And you know what, I gave up reading the first few pages of those legendary books LOTR and GoT. I'm not saying they're not good. It's just that, their style of writing is out of my taste. They're tiring to read. I highly respect George R. R. Martin and J. R. R. Tolkien, I know their books are really good based from many user reviews, It's just that, I just can't, reading their books is not really me. Okay, I admit, I'm lazy to read their books and that's why I just opted to watch the film and TV versions which I really like. Perhaps I must try reading them again in the future.

If I gave up reading GoT and LOTR so where I'm going here for the Red Prince? I almost turn down the author but as I've read the first chapter of the book, I'm hooked. It's not as hard as GoT or LOTR read, The Red Prince is actually relaxing to read. The choice of words is good and I also like the character development of the champions from the various Kingdom of Unibeltrasia.

I like the twist of events although the story is quite predictable, I truly enjoyed the plot through the end. Actually, the ending made me anticipate the next book more. I expect the next book to be more promising and more answers should be revealed in the sequel.

If they can fully publish an actual book, I suggest to the author to add a map in the opening page or end page, add a sort of glossary and also make the front cover design more catchy. A little illustration per chapter would be great too!

I'm rating this book: 3.8 / 5.0
