I bought this book from ThriftBooks.com, an online store selling used cheap books. It cost me $6.18 and this book is in Good condition. The cost may vary depending on the book's physical condition. If you think I got it cheap, you're wrong because I'm not living in the US. They offer free shipping in the US if your order is above $10 else you'll pay the shipping cost of around $5 per book.

Book Review: The Castle by Franz Kafka (Modern Library No. 388)

The first Franz Kafka book i read was Metamorphosis. It's the book where Franz Kafka is popularly known about and a literary reference of Haruki Murakami, one of my favorite author, his reference to some of his books.

As i stumbled to a sales post in a Facebook page of books for sale somewhen last year, I saw another Franz Kafka title called The Castle. I want to learn more of this author, his writing style and what's the experience of being Kafkasqued, so I bought this title from Books, Brains, Bombs Facebook page.

Franz Kafka's The Castle Book Details:

franz kafka the castle modern library 388 book register detailsNote: As I've inspected this book, ISBN and other details usually found in modern publications are not present in this title. The only unique book details I've found is shown in the right picture.

I've retrieved the ISBN and other information from a closely similar copy sold by a seller in Amazon.com (see details here):

Comparing the details above to the register of my book, It shows that my book was published first at February 1969. A true 1st Edition?

News: Mitch Albom's Newest Novel - The Magic Strings of Frankie Presto, Available on November 10, 2015.

mitch albom new novel the magic strings of frankie presto
The Magic Strings of Frankie Presto Book Cover Art
(source: hotlinked from Mitch Albom newsletter)

I just got this news from a newsletter. See sysnopsi of Mitch Albom's new novel below:

"This is the epic story of the greatest guitar player who ever lived, and the six lives he changed with his six magical blue strings.

Born under ringing chimes of a burning church, Frankie's amazing journey from a war-torn Spanish town to America weaves him through the musical landscape of the 1940s, 50's and 60's, his stunning talent affecting numerous stars along the way (Duke Ellington, Hank Williams, Elvis Presley) until, as if predestined, he becomes a pop star himself. But Frankie Presto's gift is also his burden, as he realizes the power of the magical strings his childhood teacher gave him, and how, through his music, he can actually change people's fates.

With the voice of music as our guide, we glimpse into the lives that were changed by one man whose strings could touch the music—and the magic—in each of us.

I have never had more fun writing a book, and have never been more pleased with how a story grew. This will be my longest book by far, and the most epic. It's a sort of Forest Gump-like romp through the world of music. And Frankie is the most interesting character I've ever created.

As a lifelong musician, it has been my privilege to share the message that "everyone joins a band in this life" and that music, like love, has the power to affect us all. And I cannot wait for you to read it."

Manga Review: 5 Centimeters per Second, by Makoto Shinkai

Based on the brilliant animation film by Makoto Shinkai, you can now recount the heartwrenching story of Takaki and Akari with this Manga release published by Vertical.

I ordered this manga from BookDepository.com last year December 2014 and just arrived to my home just this March 02, 2015. An almost two months of waiting. They already sent me a replacement copy due to long months of waiting for this book. I am not sure if this was the replacement copy they've sent. Anyway, I'm satisfied with their Customer Support for their response and fair resolution. In any case, I'll return back the duplicate if ever any arrive to my home.

News: Haruki Murakami's Two Early Novels Will Be Re-published in One book, Release Date is August 2015

I accidentally discovered the sale listing in Barnes&Noble (see listing here) and also tried its ISBN 0385352123 in Amazon.com. It's there! There will be a new Haruki Murakami book!

The Guardian already reported about this last year and it's becoming true, obviously. The pre-order listing just excites me.

Here are the details i gathered and there are no response "yet" from Knopf DoubleDay about further details of the book, as of this writing (whether it will be designed by Chip Kidd and more):

Title: Wind/Pinball: Two Early Novels
Author: Haruki Murakami
Format: Hardcover – Deckle Edge
Publisher: Knopf (August 4, 2015)
Translator: Ted Goossen
Language: English
ISBN-10: 0385352123
ISBN-13: 978-0385352123

Judging the title of his new book, there's no hard guess, It's obviously "Hear the Wind Sing" & "Pinball, 1973" in one published book (as The Guardian reported last year). The two early books, the English translated one, are very scarce (not the eBook). The actual copies are rare to find and the price is heavy. The average price of the said two books are around $290 - $1,980 from Amazon.com. So this would be a very good news for you if you're a Hardbound collector like me!

You can pre-order Haruki Murakami's new book Wind/Pinball below:

Book Review: The Great Gatsby by F. Scott Fitzgerald

I luckily bought this book at a cheap price (again) from another local seller in OLX.ph, for 300.00 php! I learned about this book from reading various articles about 100 bestselling or best novels of all time. It may be in 2nd to the top or within the 100 top list. The ranking are coming from reputable sites so it's a deciding factor why i bought the book.

The Great Gatsby Book Details:

The Great Gatsby Characters:
  • Nick Carraway
  • Tom Buchanan
  • Daisy Buchanan
  • Jay Gatsby / James Gatz
  • Jordan Baker

Setting: Long Island, US

Also, the Great Gatsby film back year 2013 reminded me about the book. I'm enticed to watch the film but i didn't because i knew they'd cut some of the story or put a spin-off on it. So, I reviewed this book before watching the film.
