Book Review: Anne Frank - The Diary Of A Young Girl | With An Introduction By Eleanor Roosevelt

I borrowed this from my niece. She bought this book because her school required them to read it for their literature work. I'm already familiar with this book, before i borrowed it from her. The book was banned from some countries due to racial criticism and sexual content. Comment: I just borrowed this book from my niece.

Front Cover of The Pearl by John Steinbeck - Penguin Books

Back Cover of The Pearl by John Steinbeck - Penguin Books

The setting of the story is in a poverty area on a land's seashore, I think, in a shore around Gulf of somewhere in Mexico. The main characters are Kino (the one who found the pearl of the world), Juana (Kino's wife) and Coyotito (their son).

In the story, I see that there's a barrier between rich people & the poor. I learned, In the time setting of the story, being married & being baptized would require a sum of money and getting a healthcare / a doctor would also require a sum of money. People, their neighborhood have the culture of being a gossiper where story crawls to neighbor-to-neighbors, reaching beggars to churches, offices, tantamount to the whole city.

On the last part of the story, I didn't know first exactly how *spoiler alert* their son died. It made me wonder if it was because of stray bullet fired by the hunters to scared the coyotes off who they thought was crying. Juana and her son were left to the cave. How the bullet got inside? The last part didn't clearly tell how it happens because the conclusion of the story is they arrived back in the city, with Juana having her son dead and Kino having a rifle on his back. Kino decided to throw the pearl back to the sea because it brought pain & disaster to them. And i think it's already useless too because his dream for his Coyotito will never happen.

I searched for more information about the ending of the story and it confirms the cause of death was because of a stray bullet fired by the hunters. ( source: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Pearl_(novel) )

What i learned after reading the story - having a valuable item or something great about yourself, there's an accompanied envious feeling on someone's end. Envy is a sin according to Christian ethics. For me, envy is a sin if and only if you are doing something bad due great desire. In my opinion, I couldn't say it's a sin if you're doing something good or something with an effort to get what you're envying about (like working hard to buy what you desire). Envy is a sin if you're doing something bad like stealing or doing something wrong to the person just to get what you desire. Simple, Isn't it? Well, speak of 7 Deadly Sins, the story may also relate to other three deadly sins called Greed, Wrath & Pride.

My review ends here.

Thank you for reading :-)

Pagsusuri sa Aklat: Ang Pera na Hindi Bitin ni Ardy O. Roberto, Jr.

Pamagat: Ang Pera na Hindi Bitin
May-akda: Ardy O. Roberto, Jr.
Presyo: 50.00 pesos

Salamat.

The Persepolis

Persepolis is an ancient site known as Takhte Jamshid or Throne of Jamshid, located somewhere in moder city Shiraz, Iran. It's just an FYI. It's not the setting of Satrapi's Persepolis.

The first book tells the story of Marjane’s childhood. It is the time where Iran is experiencing Martial Law. People want to oust their current President. Marjane was exposed to communist political ideas because her relative was a communist fighting the government of Iran that time. For more of summary, you can read it on Wikipedia (check link here).

The second book was Marjane’s teenage to adulthood life. Opposing the school rules in Iran which applies also to Iran being an Islamic Republic, her parents fear that Marjane’s school could be eyeing her and might lead to absurd sanction so her parents sent Marjane to Vienna for her safety and for her good to live an independent life away from dangerous Iran. Comic Book Review: Kikomachine Komix Blg. 03 ni Manix Abrera

Pangalawang Pamagat: Die! Die: Evil! Die! Ahrrrgh!
May-akda: Manix Abrera
Lingwahe: Tagalog / Filipino
Petsa ng Pagkalimbag: Hunyo 2007
Limbagan: VISPRINT, INC.

Komik Book Rebyu:

Ayon lamang. Salamat sa pagbabasa ng review ko. Hanggang sa muli!

Book Review: The Complete Sherlock Holmes - A Study in Scarlet by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle

Book: The Complete Sherlock Holmes
Novel Part to Review: A Study in Scarlet
Author: Sir Arthur Conan Doyle
ISBN: 9781435114944
Cover Design: Mada Design, Inc.
Publisher: Barnes & Noble, Inc.

Barnes & Noble Leatherbound Classic: The Complete Sherlock Holmes

The moment I received this package, I told myself "This is a beauty, a treasure." I never had this kind of book before. Barnes & Noble revived the post 19th century book style.

Barnes & Noble Leatherbound Classic The Complete Sherlock Holmes

Sherlock Holmes A Study in Scarlet

Thanks to Barnes & Noble compilation, this book suffices and I will no longer need for volume-by-volume of Sherlock Holmes books collection.

A Study in Scarlet Plot

Sherlock met John Watson for the first time. There's a crime where a man name Enoch Drebber was found dead in a house. They thought Joseph Stangerson, Drebber's acquaintance is the killer but on Gregson's finding (another detective), Drebber and Stangerson stayed on Madame Charpentier's boarding house wherein there's a lead that the killer is the Madame's son. Lestrade has also another findings, telling that Stangerson is dead, which lead to another conclusion. Concluding that a cab driver was behind the killings.
__________

"A Study in Scarlet" has two parts. Part I is "Being a Reprint from the Reminiscences of John H. Watson, MD, Late of the Army Medical Department" which were briefly summarized in the first paragraph above. Part II is "The Country of Saints" story where it tells the origin of the revenge and why the crime is committed.

I won't spoil much . . .

Sherlock Holmes' A Study in Scarlet Book Review

This will be my first time reading Sherlock Holmes and reading his first novel series gives me a new taste for detective-solving-mystery type. I am amaze on how Sherlock Holmes find the height of the killer by analyzing the writings in the wall, in the crime scene.

I was intrigued in the part two of A Study in Scarlet about the history of the Mormons. I know it's only fiction but Sherlock Holmes portray them hateful for the readers.

I describe Sherlock Holmes a very deep-thinker. He is unpredictable - Arthur Conan Doyle, his story making. In a scenario in the story where Gregson or  Lestrade gives their finding about the crime which make me the reader think its believable but Sherlock interferes with giving another surprising finding is fascinating to know.

If you appreciate the Sherlock Holmes movie then you will appreciate this Sherlock Holmes books collection compiled all-in-one even more because the series line-up (canonical) doesn't reflect the one you're watching in your cinemas.

American Gods - Neil Gaiman

American Gods Review:

"A storm is coming . . ." - this is American Gods' word of suspense. I'm anticipating that "storm" in the book and as I expected, It is on the end part of the story. I started reading Neil Gaimans after reading his Sandman graphic novel which I loved. But the time I try out his American Gods, I am just plainly satisfied.  I'm expecting something from the story after reading the first, second, third, fourth, fifth chapter and continually anticipating the next chapter but it is not the type of magical story that I'm expecting and I find it new, It's unpredictable. Maybe i am fed up with characters with a lot of show-off super power abilities in a story but American Gods is not that kind of thrill.

The book has a variety of mythical elements. It does not stick with one mythology, it contains a worldwide of myths migrated to America.

The places mentioned in the book is something I can't relate into. It made me Google some of the places so I can understand and picture out what does the place really looks like.

This book is for mature readers as there are sexual acts in the story (not really explicit).

Every chapter of this book is very long (about 20 - 30 pages) and if you're used to read chapters of 10 pages and continue-it-later then you might be tire off reading with this one. It is a no page-turner.

I don't feel I'm going to anticipate reading the sequel to this book which is Anansi Boys. Since I just started to be a Neil Gaiman fan, maybe I'll buy the next book it in the future.

American Gods Novel by Neil Gaiman (Spine)

American Gods (Spine w/o Jacket Cover)

Reference:
  • Gods & Goddesses mentioned in the book (see link here from Frowl, org). - For me, I suggest you read the gods and goddesses that will be mentioned in the book if you haven't started it yet, this reference is for your easy understanding of who's and what.
  • House on the Rock (see link of their official site here and their blog here). - Also, I suggest you take a read of what "House on the Rock" place is. Again, this reference is for your easy understanding of where and what the place is.

Reading Group Discussion Questions from American Gods 10th Anniversary Edition:
  1. American Gods is an epic novel dealing with many big themes, including sacrifice, loyalty, betrayal, love, and faith. Which theme affected you the most strongly, and why?
  2. Shadow begins the novel as a convict, and ends it a different man. How does the novel exploit the idea of America as a place where immigrants and exiles, both physical and emotional, can reinvent themselves? What makes Shadow himself so compelling and complex?
  3. American Gods is partly a road trip through a small-town America, where Shadow can see the darker side of life that other people ignore. What does the novel say about what people will accept in order to maintain a sense of normality?
  4. The old gods expect sacrifice, violence, and worship. How have they adapted to the modern world? What does this say about the nature of divinity? How and why have Americans transferred their devotion to the new technological and material gods from the old spiritual gods? What comment is being made about the modern cultural values?
  5. What is the significance of the illusion, cons, and magic tricks that occur throughout the novel? American Gods is a novel in which magic, myth, and the divine coexist with the normal, mundane, and human in a way that is utterly believable. How is this illusion maintained?
  6. How does the rich background description increase the power of the narrative? What do the secondary characters, particularly the gods whose lives and deaths we are given a brief insight into, add to the novel?
If you have read the book, let's form a discussions, please answer through commenting. Thanks!

Book Review: Rich Dad Poor Dad by Robert T. Kiyosaki

Robert Kiyosaki Book
Sub Title: What the rich teach their kids about money - that the poor and middle class do not!
Author: Robert T. Kiyosaki
Book Category: Finance / Inspirational
Book Format: Mass Market Paperback
Number of Pages: 274 pages
Publisher: Perseus Distribution
Publication Date: August 16, 2011
Language: English
ISBN-10: 1612680011
ISBN-13: 978-1612680019
Local Store Availability: National Book Store (Philippines)

I remember a couple of months back, a friend of mine who is engaged to business networking invited me to Rich Dad Poor Dad Seminar. I bewildered the title of the seminar. Rich Dad? Poor Dad? My friend told me that it will be conduct by Robert T Kiyosaki and added that the author is co-related with Donal Trump. Blah! I'm not excited. I just declined his invitation. Lately, just last week, I still remember the date - November 30, 2011; my office mate came in with a book. I arouse. I arouse when I see book(s). I checked, the name in the book was familiar. Aha! That Rich Poor Dad guy! Mark not his real name but a common name told me that the book will let me realize something. I was intrigued. The following day, I borrowed the book and read . . .

Book Review:

There is a difference between being poor and being broke. Broke is temporary. Poor is eternal.
- Robert T. Kiyosaki, Rich Dad Poor Dad, pg.5
The quoted text strike me as I read the first chapter of the book. Kiyosaki tell the story of Poor Dad and Rich Dad. And how people ended with fixated fate and why the same fate was like a wheel inherited by the next generation of poor, middle, and also including the rich class. I learned in the first or in the second chapter that 'don't let oneself work for money but the money should work for us'. It's amusing to learn his point but how? Well, that's where you need to borrow or buy the book to learn or realize how!

Kiyosaki also mentioned that people's lives are forever controlled by two emotions which is fear and greed. I say, can he include love because people are crazy when love comes. I'm just tripping, just skip this paragraph.

Finishing the first through the third chapter, the book made me think of a business that can generate money even if you are not physically there as his rich dad says that great opportunities are not seen with our eyes, they're seen with our mind. Sounds good right? Hmmm, yeah and I already made one and will just keep it to myself whatever it is.

Second thing that strikes me, relating to graduates with finished professional degree in college. Entering the world of work, that's the start that we mind other's business, not minding our own business. We start working with earned profession. That's working for others. The "others" who get the intelligent people to work for them. For them to get rich. TRUE.

The mid part of the book slow my excitement on reading it because I'm not versed with the subject as he was giving an example about doing money in Real Estate business. He also added his game thing called Robert Kiyosaki Cashflow. But lastly, the strategy in his example may apply to my field. And along chapters are about asset and liability. It will be too long to tackle about them and take the purpose of buying or borrowing the book.

Cashflow by Robert Kiyosaki also known as Rich Dad Poor Dad Game. Nah! Nice marketing.

My conclusion - it boost my financial IQ, a little. It slightly develop my financial literacy after inspired by his fruitful quotes. It's a mind opener to financial literacy. It actually take me to study money now than ever before (this is not overrated). The example may applied to your profession or it may not. And it's not a Google rumored Robert Kiyosaki Scam or Robert Kiyosaki Fraud. He's just showing an inspiration here not that he wants you to go for a Real Estate business. Buy the book if you were intrigued with my review and became interested.

Some of Robert Kiyosaki books I found in Amazon.com (looks interesting):

Gloria Macapagal Arroyo
  • S. A. R. S. Outbreak (2002)

Salamat.

Hanggang sa Muli!
